Fd: How did Art and Fly Fishing get together in your life? How were your beginnings in these two different fields?

AD: I started painting when I was 6... That's my earliest memory.  Fly fishing art began in 1997. The gallery representing me in Jackson Hole Wyoming recommended trout because it communicated with the audience I was painting to.  So I started painting trout before I started fly fishing in 2000. After learning how to fly fish, my affinity for the subject grew as it was so exciting and fun!  I never stopped and still continue on this line.

Fd: What kind of techniques do you apply? How is your process?
AD: Awe ... that is a secret! Ha ha!  I use oils and work layer upon layer.  I do have tech for each piece but it's my own.  I never studied painting so I created my own tech.

Fd: Is there a particular message or feeling you want to convey through your works?
AD: Yes ... I believe people fly fish to enter a more serene state.  A state that is completely free from the chaos and pressures of our modern day society.  I strive to capture these brief moments of perfection on canvas so that the viewer can remember the utter simplicity of the experience.

Fd: Any time for fly fishing? What are your favorite species and spots?

AD: Yes ... I fish in Montana in the Summer and the Delaware River in the Spring. My favorite spots are the Yellowstone River, the Lamar in Yellowstone... There are a few creeks that I love to fish outside of Jackson Hole but I haven't fished them in quite a while.  I've got New Zealand on my list for next year... The North Island.  I've fished the South Island... It was the best fishing I've ever experienced!

Fd: What advice would you give to the starting artists that want to get into the fly-fishing world?

AD: The advice I'd give is to start, communicate and produce great work.  There has to be a very big purpose in doing it, as it is my number 1 priority in life.

Fd: Where can we find more about your artwork?

AD: Google "AD Maddox" ... I'm all over the internet.  You will find a ton of links.
