Fd: Firstly, what is the film Vermillion all about?

KSS: Vermillion is a good representation of our creative studio. It’s a film about a love for fly fishing, a band of brothers, admiration for nature and our state of Arizona, as well as a love for filmmaking itself—while also showing all of our capabilities as a graphic design, animation, film and photography studio. It blurs the lines between our creative discipline, our mutual love for a sport and each other.

Fd: Why Lees Ferry?

KSS: Doug, our creative director, and Nick, one of our studio partners, had been up to Lees Ferry Anglers in the past for fishing. With its prime location and gorgeous scenery, it made for the perfect place to shoot. Plus the owners of the lodge and tailwater fishery are good friends of ours. Lees Ferry and the surrounding area is breathtaking, almost a scene out of reality. A few of us still visit from time to time.

Fd: You must have gotten some great shots of the Canyon with the Octocopter. What can you tell us about that?

KSS: Jenny’s definitely a keeper. This was one of the first projects we’ve done with her after Devin, Kory and Justin built her by hand last year. After nearly seven months of training, rigging, experimenting and troubleshooting, Devin truly became a master at piloting. She flew up to about 900 feet to get some of the epic aerial shots in Vermillion, while keeping steady in canyon winds blowing up to +25 knots.

Fd: Overall, how do you feel about the whole experience of making a fly-fishing film?

KSS: We’d do it again in a heartbeat, and already have ideas for the next adventure film in our little series. Vermillion was very much a passion project for us. Passion for fly fishing and filmmaking. Two things all of us love and get to combine in the best way we know how. Can’t get much better than that.

Fd: How was the relationship between Kitchen Sink Studios and the outdoors born?

KSS: Most of our team is naturally drawn to the outdoors, albeit a few of us were coerced. It’s great to see the rest of our studio easing into more internal projects were we can all enjoy nature together. Our holiday “card” this past year was short film we did in Northern Arizona where we set up a day camp in the snow and just spent time together as friends.
