Jackie and I had the opportunity to visit Aylmer Lake Lodge July 25-29. The float plane ride was breathtaking as we flew from Yellowknife. The Canadian Shield went from coniferous forests to barren ground tundra. As we landed we were greeted by our two hosts...Kevin and Patti McNeil. Our gear was taken to our cabin and we were instantly taken to the main hall for “snacks” and to a mouth watering smell emanating from the kitchen that I will never forget. Fresh ribs, cake, smoked fish and home made dressings were on the menu. After we settled in, ate a meal fit for a king and looked across the lake...Keven asked if we wanted to go fishing. Does a one legged duck swim in circles? We jumped in the boats and drove about a half mile...I’m thinking...hmmm...no fish here...second cast and WHAM...22 lber! Great Start. The evening continued to produce big fish...for Jackie! She definitely outfished me bigtime! Our second day was met with HUGE fish. Jackie outfished me 27-12...but I’m sure my twelve outweighed her 27!!! If the guides read this...they fib...lol. Speaking of guides...Kevin and Ryan were top notch. Giving 110%. Always kept us on fish! Lunches were bag lunches as we are above the tree line and no wood for fires. Propane could be utilized but would take too much of our fishing time away. The trout salad sandwiches were scrumptious. I’m not exaggerating in any way...we all asked for two to three each for the rest of the week. Soooo good! Home made cookies, fruit, cheesies, granola bars...we never brought in an empty lunch cooler!Supper was a culinary delight...baked lake trout with a creamy dill sauce that melted in your mouth! Roast beef with au jus...that was as tender as you could dream. Fresh salads, homemade salad dressing, fresh cinnamon buns...UNBELIEVABLE! Showers were meticulously spotless and bedrooms were comfy and clean/fresh. Day three was rain...and cold. No one (guests) was in a rush to go out but the guides persuaded us to dress warm and go fish. Bundled up, we proceeded across the lake...never once feeling uncomfortable with skilled guides. It’s raining, blowing, wavy...and we are trying to get to the river where our fly fishing buds from Boston could throw some flys. I’m not exactly the happiest camper right now...but I feel the boat slow down...I turn around to face the front...My Dream animal...top three on my bucket list for sure...is slowly wading across the river...A WILD ARCTIC MUSKOX! Best Day Ever! Didn’t feel the rain or cold the rest of the day! What an experience! Got back to lodge after tired arms...Jackie caught close to 30 ...I was about...cough cough...”half” that! Little did we know that Patti and her sister in law Gwen spotted us coming across the lake...and they immediately started making homemade soup! Fresh bread, home made soup, coffee/tea...for our “snack”! We showered and played cards till around 9:30...when Patti serves lasagna, fresh salad and carrot cake for dessert. I’m not sure if I mentioned this or not...but the FOOD IS AMAZING!!! Patti is an amazing cook and I really wish she would adopt me! Our last day was truly bitter sweet...sunny skies and catching fish ...I mean Jackie...lol. The day was amazing and there was truly a sense of sadness driving back to the lodge knowing we had to fly home! Packed our gear and once again got to lodge in time for meat/sausage/Veggy trays. When the plane flew over the entire lodge went silent. No one wanted to be the first to stand up. We met with handshakes but left with hugs. It was like leaving family behind...Kevin and Patti truly make you feel like a part of their family. We must have taken twenty group pictures...everyone with arms around each other! Life long friends were made that week and we will never forget any of them! Once we got on the plane everyone went quiet...what does one say? The only thing to do was lean back, smile and think about this truly remarkable experience. We await the day we can once again visit Kevin and Patti at AYLMER LAKE LODGE! It is indeed an experience of a lifetime! Best Fishing Trip Ever!

I was there for about three weeks during the summer of 2018 and I consider this journey as a lifetime experience. Aylmer Lake Lodge remains one of the (very) few pristine fishing locations in North America and no doubt this is world class fishing. That's the place for real big fish in the middle of the deep silence of the Canadian tundra.
