Under my humble point of view, fall season is an excellent time for fly fishing around San Martín and Junín de los Andes area in Patagonia Argentina.
Beautiful colors upholster the mountains along the river; water gets cooler due to lower temperatures and trout start moving with much more determination than they usually do with late summer higher temperatures. On the other hand, for those of us who guide during the peak season, we find that precious free time to enjoy the river with family and friends.
Together with a couple of friends we decided to load the raft with a limited camp for what we are used to during our commercial float trips and faced to float the lower section of the Chimehuín River on a chilly morning.

We found the river banks full of different colors and the water level really low because late winter lack of snowfalls and few spring and summer rainfalls.
As is often the case at this time, and what mainly makes it magical, is that we were able to fish both with streamers as well as with small dries tied to a 5x tippet. Just fantastic!
Green, black, green with orange and cream weighted streamers, tied to a 9 'leader finished in 2x were a good option for our sinking lines. On the other hand, during the warmer hours of the day, floating lines with a 9 'leader ended with a 4 and 5x tippet with mayflies and caddis sized #14 to #18 were an excellent choice. We have seen countless hatches past noon and many trout rising.
Undoubtedly it is a difficult time for camping because nights could be really cold, but without a doubt it is well worth dressed warmly and ignore the opinion of those non-fishing people who would stay indoor and near a stove.
