Inshore Flys

Some flys I use when fishing in and around the shore.
Small Hollow Flye. Flats crab for Cape Cod with John Payne Black, grey and white. Herring Hollow Clouser Half and Half for the fall run. Bass, bluefish, false albacore and who knows...they all eat these snacks. A peanut bunker that is truly an accurate description. As long as the cork almost 3" tyed on a #1 Tiemco: ostrich plume, bucktail and select craft fur plus a little Crystal Flash. The back of the fly is tyed BTD and the last two tyes are Hollow tyes. Peanut bunker are everywhere.....this one should fool em! Lg Double Banger foam head, pink/lavender/white saddles with marabou. Fly is 9 inches and I'm aiming for a nice striped bass this fall. Mole crab flys, simple EP tan brush with legs, a lead eye and a little orange for an egg sac made out of chenille. Very successful fly lately on summer flounder and stripers. Jonny King's Hoo Fly a top producer in the salt and in freshwater. This one is peanut bunker pattern, food for all. Beast Fly in the water, it has the most enticing action. Bob Popovics' Beast Fly, tyed with a mono extension, it measures 15 inches. I'm really proud of this thing. I found the Twister tail and brought it home. This is what I did with it. I'm thinking a good fluke fly and stripers should eat it when the killies are spawing. A very easy way to build a Epoxy Minnow with some yellow Corsair tubing, bucktail a little flash and eyes. Body covered with UV resin... Bob Popovics' Jiggy Flye on a 2/0 long shank Mustad. With the herring coming into our waters a blue fly is the ticket. But, the water is sometimes stained and a loud fly is called for.....hence this BTD (BuckTail Deceiver). A modified Semper Flye using a Complex Twist for the body....it should catch. Looking for a fly with lots of action so this is what I came up with. Tail ostrich feather over sparse bucktail, then marabou, the artic fox mixed with some some flash. then a pink guinea hen finally a pinkish Fish Skull. A fly inspired by Jonny King, Complex Twist body then squid face. Added some hot orange/ gray silicone wigglies on a 2/0 long shank hook. Mole crabs are the favorite striper snack so here is one that works in my neck of the woods. In Florida I'm sure the guys that fish Pompano will love it too. Scrap materials hanging around the desk....Hollow Clown Fly. Big and bright should get a look by those killer bluefish down the street this spring. Need the red to show off the fly, peanut bunker 5" with a little lead wrap. Hollow Flye in bright colors and grizzly hackle plus some flash. Jig hook tyed bendback style bucktail and some flash. Hollow fly morning colors....white tail of ostrich and bucktail, then lavender and dark purple on top with hidden UV lavender Crystal Flash then a grey belly mix. This is basically a Lefty's Deceiver with the saddles for a tail but I added four "bird fur" feathers to the tail. The wing or top is all Electric Lime green Angle Hair and the belly is Senyo dubbing. An Iceabou spearing/silver side on a #4 hook for springtime stripers and later little tunny. In late Nov or early Dec we get bait that is small and see through....we call is snot bait. This is a size #6 hook, with some flash and a holographic eye and epoxy over white Ultra Hair for that see through look. Nice little herring for the surf. The last of the stripers are passing us on their way south. Bob Popovics' Hollow Flye Peanut. With all the bait now my fly has to stand out so these colors are great for stripers and blues. Needed something simple, sinking with fish catching eye appeal. Black/white fly with pink and lavender in the mid section and flash. Gurgler on a size 2 long shank hook with feathers and flash in the tail and foam and EP Brush body. Double head in classic red and white colors. A hollow tye spearing. Body of EP Brush, one collar of white and olive bucktail tyed reverse. Folded back and covered in Fabric Fusion with a stick on eye. Peanuts are on the menu for fall fishing. Fabric Fusion on a Bob Popovics Minnow. Clear, no yellowing and hard coated. Just a nice Clouser Minnow with local colors. Stripers, blues and anything eat spearing love this fly. Another worm hook fly just like the black one posted a while back. EP pearl brush, white and yellow ostrich then some holographic eyes. Another herring fly for the spring, can't have too many. EP Brush body with bucktail and grizzly hackle. This should be the last one of this Bob Popovics Bucktail Deceiver for the up and coming season. Have to get some shrimp ready soon. In the mood to tye up a squid using all the leftover materials lying around on my bench. Saddle hackles, two colors of bucktail, some select craft fur then some 3D eyes and bang.....a squid. Another BTD (Bucktail Deceiver) for spring. When the blues show up this will be destroyed but who cares.....always tye more. Bob Popovics' Bucktail Deceiver. Since finding good white feathers are getting harder to find bucktail is a great material because of it movement in the water. Bob Popovics Bulkhead Deceiver for the spring herring run.....if spring ever comes! Fly dreamer contest winner David Bullard sent me a selection of flys that he used in Florida. I'm hoping to head down this year and give em a workout! Thank you so much David, what a bud! Fly dreamer Jason Taylor is a superb fly tyer and a very nice guy to know. He posted a picture of one of his so I gave it a go and this is my variation. Size 2, short shank hook, all SF Blended fibers and two holographic eyes. Three inches long and chunky.....very edible. I found these materials on the bench....Black EP long brush, some ostrich feathers and two eyes. It's going to be a hit at night! Grizzly hackle down the to top to give it a little pizzazz. Two for my close friend who does not tye but can catch fish! This color combo was hot last year, the grizzly hackle only lasted one fish but the fly was good for a day's action. A herring fly made from wig hair for the spring blues. Fun to tye and cut to shape. Getting a jump on my bluefish flys for the spring. They can shred a fly in a few chomps but this wig hair last for a few fish. Hot fly in the Biloxi Marsh for me, bright flys were what the redfish wanted. Getting ready for redfish trip in Nov., this is a black and orange crab. Into the marsh we go! A very simple marabou fly that my friend George from Cape Code gave me tips on how to tye. It has killer action in the water and it caught fish first time out on the beach! A close up of one of George's marabou creations. This is a Lefty's Deceiver with marabou collars and some flash. The action is what draws the strikes. These were a gift from a fly tyer named George that lives on Cape Cod. He knows that I've always loved his flys so he sent me bunch....WOW! Thank you George, what a generous and talented tyer. Herring fly tyed with as a Lefty's then SF Blend body. Herring will be showing up soon so I'm ready to go. Bob Popovics Bucktail Deceiver tyed small on a light 2/0 hook. I like the grizzly hackle along the side, there is olive and black to top off the fly. Arctic Deceiver big fat and light to throw. Choose the large wide saddles and tye them in Deceiver style add some flash. Next tye in some white arctic fox along with some Senyo Lazer dubbing on top in olive. Tye in three more white and olive dubbing (de Soon the herring will be heading inshore to spawn. This should get some attention when it swims out in the surf. BTD/Hollow flye with blue grizzly hackle about 8 inches long. Spring means spearing or silversides that come inshore for stripers and bluefish. They appear in the bays and ocean in schools which bring the predators. Very light olive on top and white on the bottom with silver braid in the middle and in the tail. Another striped bass bunker fly with grizzly hackles off the top and some nice pink for the belly. Tail is bucktail with ostrich then one collar of bucktail tyed BTD (Bucktail Deceiver) style then two collars of bucktail Hollow Tye add in the grizzly and Hollow fly peanut bunker about 5 inches long. Again, this is my friend Joe's fly, we sat down one Sunday and tyed up his favorite pattern for stripers......here's my take. White bucktail for the tail, on top tented blue hackle with flash. Next palmer on marabou (in this case pink and yellow), red cac A large Clouser in herring colors for the spring and late fall. This fly is not that hard to cast, timing is key, as a shore fisherman some days the wind holds me back. BTD and Hollow combo, heavy use of peacock on top, ostrich/thin saddles/bucktail with flash for a tail and bucktail body. Red throat was an after thought.....looks good. In the spring stripers love clams so I decided to tye a clam fly they would love to eat or laugh at :) Bob Popovics Hollow Flye in yellow, stripers favorite color at times and bluefish devour em. Tyed up the "go to fly" in different patterns. Top left is a Bob Pop Epoxy Minnow, top right is a Deceiver and the bottom two are Clouser Half and Half. Half and Half used here in the Northeast. This has been a go-to fly for us the past few years. This is the latest progression in the sand eel fly, grizzly hackle tented on top. Been taking some nice stripers on this......thanks Andrew. Two more sand eel flys for the coming late fall run of stripers. Rachael Marie, a member here, gets the credit for getting me started on this style and Bob Popovics for developing this flye. Another rootbeer sand eel only with some bead chain to help sink it faster in rough water. Rootbeer sand eel tyed Jiggy style, long shank 2/0 Mustad hook A Crease Slider, a floating fly for striped bass here in the NE of the US. Easy to make fun to fish. Hollow tye silverside. Fly fishing picture Fly fishing picture Simple fly of SF blend with a grizzly flat wing. The body is translucent with a little flash and the grizzly defines the back. Last year it was a hot fly when the spearing were in. I add a lead eye for the sinking version in shallow water. Fly fishing picture This is a blue claw crab fly for redfish in the Louisiana marshes. It is a large fly with medium lead eyes to help it sink not too fast.
